Learn SUM, AVERAGE, MIN & MAX in Google Sheets – Beginner Tutorial
Hello! In this article, I’d like to share one of my first steps in learning Google Sheets — especially how to use some of the basic formulas that are essential for office tasks or everyday work.
Google Sheets (or Excel) is a powerful tool used in many types of jobs. Understanding basic formulas like SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, and MAX can really help you to:
Create sales reports
Analyze data
Manage budgets or student scores
And so much more!
I also made a silent video tutorial, which you can follow along. Watch the video below, and then read the explanation of each step.
📝 Step-by-Step Guide:
1️⃣ Open Google Sheets
Go to Google Sheets and click on Blank to create a new spreadsheet.
2️⃣ Enter or Paste Your Data
Create data just like in the video. If you already have data in Excel, simply copy and paste it into Google Sheets.
3️⃣ Use the Basic Excel Formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN):
📌 SUM (Add All Values or Get the Total):
=SUM(B3:B7)
→ B3:B7 is the cell range to be summed. You can select your own data range by scrolling over the cells, as shown in the video.
📌 AVERAGE (Calculate the Average Value):
=AVERAGE(E3:E7)
📌 MAX (Find the Highest Value):
=MAX(B12:B16)
📌 MIN (Find the Lowest Value):
=MIN(E12:E16)
🔍 Note: You can use these formulas without moving your columns — just adjust the selected range properly. Be careful when selecting the data to avoid wrong results.
🎁 Bonus:
📌 Add Table
Borders and Highlight Results: Use the Borders and Bold tools in the toolbar to make your spreadsheet cleaner and easier to read.
📌 Rename Your Sheet: Right-click on the "Sheet1" tab → click Rename → type a new name that fits your data, such as Exam Scores or Sales Data.
Thanks for watching and happy learning!
